Unit GIC1 – Management of health and safety (Open Book Exam)
Element 1: Why we should manage workplace health and safety (morals, money, legal frameworks, contractors)
Element 2: How health & safety management systems work (ISO 45001, Plan‑Do‑Check‑Act, policies)
Element 3: Managing risk – understanding people and processes (culture, human factors, risk assessment, change management, emergency procedures)
Element 4: Health & safety monitoring and measuring (incident investigation, active/reactive monitoring, auditing, review)
Unit GIC2 – Risk assessment (Practical in your workplace)
Element 5: Physical & psychological health (noise, vibration, radiation, mental ill‑health, violence)
Element 6: Musculoskeletal health (WRULDs, manual handling, load‑handling equipment)
Element 7: Chemical and biological agents (hazardous substances, exposure limits)
Element 8: General workplace issues (work at height, confined spaces, lone working, slips/trips, vehicle movement)
Element 9: Work equipment (machinery hazards, guards, hand‑held tools)
Element 10: Fire (principles, prevention, alarms, evacuation)
Element 11: Electricity (hazards, shocks, control measures)
Assessment & Grading
- GIC1 (Open Book Exam): 5 hours, scenario‑based. Taken from home or workplace.
- GIC2 (Practical): 4 hours, risk assessment in your workplace.
- Qualification grade (based on GIC1 only): Distinction (75+), Credit (65–74), Pass (45–64), Refer (≤44).
- Both units must be passed to receive the parchment.
