  • Research your organisation’s health & safety vision
  • Research your organisation’s key health & safety risks
  • Understand your organisation’s HS policy and its objectives

Element 1: Foundations of HS Leadership

  • What is HS leadership – reasons & benefits
  • Traits that negatively impact leadership
  • Developing an agreed HS vision
  • Characteristics of a good HS leader
  • Moral, legal & business reasons (ILO C155)
  • Leadership assurance (ISO 45001): risk profiling, PDCA, KPIs, benchmarking
  • Influence on safety culture: just culture, Reason's Swiss cheese, HROs

Element 2: Human Failure & Decision‑Making

  • Error vs violation – skill‑based errors, mistakes
  • Routine, situational, exceptional violations
  • Automatic vs reflective decision making
  • Mental shortcuts: anchoring, availability, representativeness
  • Biases: halo, confirmation, self‑serving, hindsight
  • Habits, personal beliefs & individual risk perception

Element 3: Leadership – Styles, Values & Relationships
